Port winds and the Curonian Spit

Klaipėda is a working port with ferry links to the Curonian Spit, a narrow, protected strip of dunes and forest. Building on the Spit is tightly regulated, so any plan there must go through the local authority first.

On the mainland, the suburbs and villages around the city have more freedom. The sea climate is softer than inland, but the wind is a factor.

Place the cabin out of the strongest wind and keep a path clear for the winter.

Winter dipping tradition

In Klaipėda winter bathing is part of life for some. A hot cabin at home gives a controlled way to warm up. Please be careful in cold water: go in gradually, stay for a short time and never swim alone.

Windy days

On windy days, use the leeward side of the house for the cabin and keep the flue clear of obstructions.

Salt, wind and wood

Sea air carries salt and moisture. Treat the exterior every year, wipe metal parts, and keep the vents open after use so the timber stays dry. Done regularly, this takes only an hour or two a year.
