Does a Garden Sauna Need Planning Permission?
Does a garden sauna need planning permission or building regulations approval? What it depends on and how to confirm it with your local council.
Read →A stove that is too weak will not heat through in winter, which is exactly the season you put up a garden sauna for. One that is too strong wastes wood or electricity. Fortunately the rule for choosing is simple.
About 1 kW of stove output per cubic metre of sauna volume.
To work out a barrel’s volume: radius squared × 3.14 × length of the sauna room. Example: inside diameter about 2 m (radius 1 m), sauna room 2.5 m long → 3.14 × 1 × 1 × 2.5 ≈ 7.9 m³ → a stove of about 8 kW.
If the sauna has a changing room or a terrace, only the heated sauna room counts.
Using the full cylinder volume overestimates slightly because benches and stove take up space, and that gives you a natural reserve.
Large glazing: glass loses heat faster than 44 mm of timber.
An open, windy position.
Regular use in hard frost.
Wall thickness under 44 mm.
A stove that is too strong warms the air faster than the stones and walls. The thermometer shows 90 °C, but the sauna still feels “cold”.
With an electric stove, more power means higher demands on the connection and a higher bill, with no gain.
Larger electric stoves need a dedicated, correctly protected circuit, and some models require a three-phase supply. Check this with an electrician before buying.
The stove must hold enough stones for its output. Too few stones on a powerful stove mean a stinging heat and a weak steam.
Before you blame the stove, check the door seal and the ventilation. That is where the cause usually lies.
Second suspect: damp wood. From about 25% moisture, most of the energy goes into evaporating water.
