Manufacturer or reseller: what matters when buying a sauna
How to tell who builds a garden sauna, who sells it and who answers for the warranty, plus the questions that cut through the sales talk before you buy.
Read →Sauna warranties vary enormously and hardly anyone reads them before buying. A few questions up front save disappointment, because with a sauna it is easy to confuse a defect with the natural behaviour of wood.
The wooden structure: with us, 12 months. On the market it ranges from one year to several.
The stove: this is the stove manufacturer's warranty, not the sauna seller's. It is a separate document with its own term and often its own service. Make sure you receive it.
The roof covering: often the shortest, and the one most often forgotten in conversation, even though the roof is the most exposed to weather.
Natural surface cracks along the grain and colour changes from the sun. This is a property of a material that works between outside temperature and 90 °C, not a workmanship fault. An honest seller tells you this before the sale.
The results of missing treatment. Treating the outside once a year is the user's job.
The results of a poor base. A sauna standing on grass will settle crooked, which is not a design fault.
Wearing parts: seals, sauna stones.
Leaks in the structure under correct use. Any fair warranty should cover that.
Faults in the roof covering in the first years.
A leaking flue or flue passage, where the company did the installation.
A warped door in the first season.
Who pays for the call-out on a warranty repair? For a sauna standing hundreds of kilometres from the workshop, that can cost more than the repair itself, and it is the most common point of dispute.
How quickly do they respond to a report? “Promptly” means nothing.
Is the sauna collected for repair, or repaired on site? Or are replacement parts sent out for you to fit?
Does the warranty pass to a new owner if you sell the house?
Who takes the report, who looks into it, and how fast? With a reseller, what matters is that they handle the case themselves rather than pointing you to a manufacturer abroad.
With us, a claim starts with a message on WhatsApp with photos. Your 12 months of warranty on the structure applies, and the stove is covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
Take photos straight away, before you touch anything. Ideally dated.
Describe it: what, since when, under what circumstances.
Report it in writing or by email, not just by phone, so that there is a record and a date.
A warranty (guarantee) is a voluntary promise from the manufacturer or seller. They set its scope and duration themselves.
Your statutory consumer rights (in the UK under the Consumer Rights Act, in Ireland and other EU countries under national consumer law) apply regardless of whether any guarantee was given.
In practice: if a seller refuses a repair by pointing to a warranty exclusion, it is worth checking whether the case falls under your statutory rights. They are two separate routes.
